Sunflowers

I like sunflowers, don't you? I remember when I was young, over a half century ago, there were large, empty lots in downtown Los Angeles that were full of great, shaggy, yellow sunflowers of all sizes. Some old sentinels were bigger than the bottom of a five gallon bucket. They grew along the fences or out in the open, wherever they could find space to shoot up and greet the sun. Sometimes, there were so many, they fought for room and bulged out over the fences into other yards. Once we boys, on a playful summer afternoon, found a stand of them and built a fort back inside, under the shadows of the big heads. All you could see were sunflowers and more sunflowers. I know now what Van Gogh must have felt among such sunflowers that last summer of his life. Lord willing, as time turns around, may I paint many sunflowers before I'm through.
