Shadow Dweller

I am one who dwells in the shadows,
away from the light. Darkness is my
natural state and quite comforting to me
and mine, as much as the light is pleasing
to all those who flourish in it. Have you
ever noticed how many shadows there
are? You can't escape them. Just look
around you and become aware. We are
behind and under and even between-- in
the most unlikely places where you can't
see, but might put your hand.

Realize that half the time, the Earth is in
shadow, and even when the light of the
Sun shines on it, there are still shadows,
deep shadows where all manner of things
live and wait for the night to come out
and prey on the creatures of the light who
are our meat and passion. We live for
you, and wait for you to sleep and dream.

Even the bottoms of leaves are in the
shadows, and we can wait there in soft
dreams awaiting our time of grandeur
when the Moon rises and sets us free to
do as we will. Imagine what is waiting
for you in the crypt and how long we will
have to entertain ourselves at your oh, so
very helpless expense We can wait.

Are you a creature of the light? Well
then, you are at our mercy. Ha, ha, you
will never find us as we leap from shadow
to shadow, peering back at you from a
place that you can't reach. We will not
come out into the light, but in time, you
will come into the darkness. Our lovely
darkness, where we will feed upon your
last remains and have our way with you.
Sure. Try an stop us if you can. Go
ahead and scream as you watch us busily
decimate you in that place of stillness
where the Sun will never again shine.

We are those that all creatures of the day
hate and fear. You can feel us crawling
upon your soul when the shadows grow
long, and the long night approaches on
velvet shod feet. Softly stealing, barely
seen in the mist of the half life of sleep.
We are there, but not; half realized as the
cotton stuffing fills your mind in the
shadows. Call us nightmares if you will.
It doesn't bother us in the least. For it is
only your restless spirits that are finely
tormented by the thought of us, having
the last laugh on you. Ha, ha, ha, what
are you going to do about it?
