The full moon slipped behind the edge of a convenient cloud that
momentarily cut off the silvery haze that was the only light
holding back the darkness that filled the countryside where stood
the old house with rotting foundations. The hour was just after
sunset, but it was just full dark. Say, did you ever notice how
darkness is more powerful than light? Just light a candle or turn
on a flashlight and watch it labor mightily to hold back the heavy
weight of the darkness. Anyway, darkness always wins out in the
end, because as soon as the candle burns down or the batteries in
the flashlight deplete, darkness always returns and takes over
where light had once been. Darkness is natural whereas light is
aberrant. Just open the closet door and watch the darkness
slowly, almost grudgingly recede. That is because there is more
darkness than light. Darkness only loses a battle for a short time.
Light is just an abnormality as it disappears instantly unless
constantly attended. When you turn off a light, did you ever see
light leave? Darkness always wins.
As I was saying, that lone, broken-down, country mansion was
momentarily steeped in blackest darkness The sun had just
disappeared over the horizon and full darkness, except for the
errant Moon, had settled in for the night. That old manse had
stood abandoned for years, but every now and then, it is said that
somebody just might still live there as they have been seen upon
occasion coming and going in the hours between sunset and
sunrise. The locals figured that whoever they were probably
worked the swing shift downtown at the packing plant, as no one
had ever seen anyone there during the day.
But suddenly, there was a bright light that bathed the decaying, old
house in a quarts-like glow, as a round, saucer-shaped ship slowly
settled to within a few feet of the ground. The loading bay doors
hissed open and more light spilled out of the ship, further pushing
back the pervasive darkness-- at least for the moment. Soon, a
work party of small, gray creatures with large, black eyes
clambered down the loading ramp and swiftly covered the distance
between the idling ship and the house.
The grays then burst open the sagging cellar doors and entered the
old house through the basement, as they had found that it was
often the easiest way to gain access to such structures. They were
on some sort of business, the likes of which, we can only guess,
but soon, the gray hoard could be seen, carrying boxes large enough
to have contained human remains if one were so inclined to consider
such things a possibility.
The small, gray entities knew what they were doing and made
good speed crossing the yard to the ship despite their heavy loads
and fairly raced up the loading ramp like so many ants returning to
their chambers as if they were afraid of being caught, unawares by
the darkness. The heavy doors slid shut behind them as they
hastily entered their alien slave craft, and in seconds, the darkness
sprang back tightly as the ship's lights disappeared in the distance
while the ship headed for the next house. Why, over a thousand people
disappear everyday in the U.S. alone-- Who would even notice?
This was just one isolated occurrence in a long line of occurrences.
You see, a certain planet that only swings near Planet Earth once
every 3500 years had returned, following its clockwork orbit as it
always had in the past. The residents of this quickly approaching
orb were anticipative and even a bit eager, as this was their first
opportunity in ages to harvest a cargo of powerful, but pseudo-
intelligent slaves to do the heavy work on their smaller planet.
They had been here before. These outsized Earth Men who were
genetic constructs, created long ago by one of their survey units,
were exceptionally strong from fighting the gravity of this large
planet that swung around a minor sun in a galaxy far from their
own. However, if controlled properly, these Earth Men were of
immense value and highly prized for their abilities.
The old stock back on the home planet was worn down from
interbreeding, and new blood was needed for the herd. They would
have plenty now. But more than that, it was hoped that on the next
swing near Earth a colony could be successfully established as the
constructs nearly had the rather violent planet called Earth reasonably
tamed-- at least in places. Yes, the constructs had laid the roads,
straightened the rivers and built the bridges. Major power plants were
up and working, and at night, the alien masters, gods if you like, could
see the tiny lights of the cities winking on and off in the distance.
Saucer-like ships now rained down on Planet Earth in the dark of
night and quickly abducted individual human slaves from the herd
while they slept. Taking one here and one there, fulfilling the prophecy
that one would be taken and one would be left. The busy work
commenced throughout the long night, filling orders for workers,
technicians and even mathematicians and scientists of several
disciplines. No one was immune to their scrutiny. However, The
chore was fairly easy to accomplish because of the protection
afforded by the darkness, and before dawn, the alien space raiders
all had full cargo holds of human slaves. Then, one by one, they
lifted out of the atmosphere of this green planet that teemed with
life and soared through space, chasing after their receding world,
expecting to rendezvous with it in about 28 Earth days.
All through the day and well into the night, the long coffles of
abject, human slaves marched from the ship to waiting ground
conveyance vehicles in order to be hauled away like cattle to the
breeding farms across the valley from the space port. Finally the
last slave ship pulled up to the dock, and the attendants waited for
the cargo bay doors to open. They did not. Frustrated, the small
gray, alien loading dock foreman got on the radio and called the
ship's captain advising him to open the cargo bays, but there was
no answer from the waiting salve ship. Apparently, the ship had
landed while controlled by the on-board computer. That was
entirely possible. But perhaps something had gone wrong, so the
foreman switched to the computer terminal, and sure enough, that
was the case as the mechanical voice of the ship's computer
informed him of the situation as it stood.
Apparently, when approaching the home planet, appropriate action
had not been undertaken by captain or crew, so the emergency
circuits had kicked in, and the ship's computer took over landing
procedures as a matter or course. All the computer had to do was
keep the ship in a holding orbit until it's turn came up and then
initiate the landing and docking sequences-- a piece of cake.
At the command of the alien dock foreman, the ship's computer
opened the air locks and cargo bay doors by the numbers, as the
ground crew stood there waiting and talking among themselves,
apprehensive of what was to follow. Soon, the first set of heavy,
metallic doors hissed open, and then the second set of airlock
doors disengaged and slid into their receptacles. Odd, as the
second set of doors opened, a flurry of activity occurred as several
strange creatures with large, leathery wings, sharp teeth and red,
beady eyes flapped through them and quickly disappeared into the
soft, velvet, night sky of the alien home planet.
Inside the cavernous alien ship there was no movement. The
silence of death permeated the stillness above the drained bodies of
Earth men and aliens alike. The alien slavers had inadvertently
commandeered a cache of the old Gothic Vampyres who had quietly
and knowingly came to dinner... You see, Satan knows how to deal
with beings who intrude upon His territory. The darkness had won again.
